Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Hidayat Nur Wahid reiterated the nation's commitment to the 1945 Constitution, which unequivocally condemns all forms of colonialism, including the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.

Addressing a pro-Palestinian rally at Monas Square, Jakarta, on Sunday, he emphasized the Indonesian people's historical rejection of colonialism, as enshrined in the constitution enacted on August 18, 1945.

The 1945 Constitution also affirms the inalienable right to independence for all nations, including Palestine, the Deputy Speaker stated.

He highlighted the unwavering support of Indonesia's first president, Soekarno, for the Palestinian struggle.

Until an independent Palestinian state is established, Israel will continue to be viewed as a colonizer, he asserted.

Indonesian ulema have consistently championed the Palestinian cause, and these rallies are a tangible expression of the constitution's principles, according to the Deputy Speaker.

Emphasizing the moral and constitutional imperative to support Palestine, he vowed to continue these demonstrations.

Regarding the Palestinian matter, the Deputy Speaker declared, "We have repeatedly staged the rallies, and we shall never feel tired of doing that," adding that supporting the Palestinian struggle is a duty rooted in faith, constitution, and humanity.

Indonesia's unwavering support for Palestine is a cornerstone of its foreign policy, transcending changes in government.

President Soekarno's 1962 declaration remains a guiding principle: "As long as Palestine remains occupied, Indonesia will stand in defiance against Israel."
