Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) announced it is monitoring the coastal area of Berau, East Kalimantan, after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake triggered 19 shallow tectonic tremors.

The agency is also educating locals on earthquake preparedness.

Head of the BNPB's Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, stated that the monitoring and disaster preparedness efforts are being conducted by the Berau District Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) under the BNPB's supervision.

“These efforts aim to ensure the community's safety. Damaged buildings must be promptly inspected by authorities,” he said on Monday.

He noted that the main earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.6, occurred at 9:08 p.m. local time on Sunday.

The epicenter was located at coordinates 1.30 degrees North and 118.46 degrees East, about 147 km southeast of Berau, at a depth of 11 km.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency’s (BMKG) Earthquake and Tsunami Center reported that, following the main tremor, 19 aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 2.8 to 4.2 have been recorded as of 8 a.m. local time on Monday.

The BMKG team suggested that the aftershocks may be linked to seismic activity along the Sangkulirang-Mangkaliat fault, located in the Berau area.

According to reports to the BNPB, the series of tremors, which lasted two to three seconds, prompted residents to evacuate their homes and move to safer areas.

However, the BMKG confirmed that the earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat.

“So far, there have been no official reports of building damage or casualties,” Muhari added.
