Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia urged Israel to immediately adhere to ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and no longer prohibit UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) activities as mandated by two UN General Assembly resolutions passed Wednesday (December 11).

"A permanent ceasefire is urgently needed in Gaza, and the resumed operation of UNRWA will help save Palestinians from suffering," as stated by Indonesia's Foreign Ministry in its written statement to welcome the passing of the two UNGA resolutions.

As published on their social media account on Thursday, the Foreign Ministry stated that Indonesia was among the parties who introduced the resolution on ceasefire to the UNGA Emergency Special Session (ESS) 10 on December 11, 2024.

The UNGA resolution on UNRWA also reflected global support for the agency to continue its mandate and condemned Israeli law that will ban UNRWA operation in East Jerusalem, the ministry stated.

With the approval of the two UNGA resolutions, Indonesia urges the international community to put pressure on Israel to implement the resolutions without delay.

"It is to ensure a lasting ceasefire, the continuation of humanitarian assistance, and pave the way towards the realization of the Two-state Solution," according to the Foreign Ministry.

The UN General Assembly, on Wednesday, adopted a resolution calling for an "immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire" in Gaza as well as the release of all hostages held in the conflict.

The resolution submitted by the Palestinian mission to the UN, urging immediate humanitarian access, was adopted with 158 votes in favor, nine against, and 13 abstentions.

Meanwhile, the UNGA reaffirmed its support for the UNRWA and called on Israel to ensure the agency’s uninterrupted operations through another resolution adopted with 159 votes in favor, nine against, and 11 abstentions.

Describing the agency as "the backbone of all humanitarian response in Gaza," the resolution stressed that "no organization can replace or substitute the UNRWA capacity and mandate to serve Palestine refugees."

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has also been requested to submit a comprehensive report on the implementation of the two resolutions within 60 days.
