Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chairwoman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Lestari Moerdijat, emphasized the importance of consistently increasing public awareness about the various forms of violence, including at the village level.

She stated that these efforts are essential to achieving comprehensive protection for all citizens against all forms of violence.

“If needed, efforts to educate the public about the different types of violence should extend to the village level,” she noted in a statement on Monday.

Moerdijat also highlighted the urgent need for policymakers to understand and enforce laws that protect women and children from violence, while also strengthening community participation.

“Threats of violence against women and children continue to occur, even though several laws exist to protect every citizen,” she pointed out.

She cited data from the 2024 National Women's Life Experience Survey (SPHPN) and the 2024 National Children and Adolescents' Life Experience Survey (SNPHAR), which show that one in four women and one in two children in Indonesia have experienced violence.

Moerdijat believes that the high rate of violence against women and children stems from limited public understanding and insufficient enforcement of protective laws. To ensure comprehensive protection for all citizens, she urged relevant authorities and law enforcement agencies to intensify public education efforts and ensure the implementation of existing laws.

Earlier, Moerdijat also underscored the importance of anti-sexual violence education in schools and communities to enhance awareness and prevent sexual violence. She stated that anti-sexual violence education should begin with comprehensive sexuality education, integrating religious, biological, social, and cultural perspectives.
