"We believe it is important for regional governments to voice their perspectives and engage in dialogue with us," he stated in Jakarta on Thursday night (June 26).
Purwagandhi underscored the need for stakeholders to consider existing regulations and the significant investment poured into the nearby Kertajati International Airport in Majalengka District before moving forward with the reactivation proposal.
He stressed that it is crucial to maximize the use of Kertajati Airport, especially given the significant funding invested in its development and operations.
Bearing that in mind, the minister called on the Bandung municipal and West Java provincial governments to collaborate in formulating a solution to manage both airports efficiently.
"It is worth remembering that Kertajati Airport was established through contributions from regional governments during both the planning and construction phases," he added.
He further reiterated the central government’s commitment to supporting Kertajati Airport as a means to enhance inter-regional connectivity and accelerate local economic growth.
Earlier, Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan urged the central government to reopen Husein Sastranegara Airport, affirming that it could serve as a catalyst for tourism development in Greater Bandung and the surrounding areas.
"The reopening of Husein Airport will boost tourism not only in Bandung but also across West Java," he remarked in West Bandung on June 12.
The mayor noted that several travelers still prefer flying to Bandung via Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta rather than Kertajati Airport, which he believes benefits the capital city more than West Java.
In response, Deputy Transportation Minister Suntana stated that the central government would first conduct a comprehensive study in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to assess the proposal's feasibility.
Speaking in Sumedang, West Java, on Wednesday (June 25), Suntana highlighted that the decision will take into account the budget burden on the West Java provincial government for operating Kertajati International Airport, which is pegged at Rp60 billion (around US$3.67 million) per year.
