Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid has responded to TikTok’s voluntary suspension of its Live feature in Indonesia, expressing hope that the decision will be short-lived.

Speaking after a cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Sunday, Meutya said the government respects TikTok’s decision.

“We have received TikTok’s notification regarding the voluntary closure of its Live feature, and we hope this will not last long,” she stated.

Meutya added that President Prabowo Subianto has emphasized the government’s commitment to remaining open and responsive to public aspirations, including feedback related to TikTok Live.

While the suspension affects micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that rely on live broadcasts for sales, e-commerce activities can still continue without the feature.

“If conditions gradually improve, we hope TikTok Live can be reinstated,” she said.

The minister also expressed optimism that the situation would stabilize soon, allowing businesses to fully leverage digital platforms once again.

On 30 August 2025, TikTok temporarily suspended its Live feature in Indonesia, following public protests in Jakarta and other regions.

TikTok stated that the suspension was intended to prevent potential misuse and to maintain the platform as a safe and respectful space.

Previously, on Friday, Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, clarified that the summons of social media platform representatives like Meta and TikTok was part of ongoing content moderation efforts, not related to recent demonstrations.

He explained that the government works with platform providers to curb harmful content, such as online gambling and other illegal material.

“We’ve long collaborated to ensure platforms comply with community guidelines and regulations,” he added.

Content moderation includes monitoring, reviewing, and managing user-generated content to prevent the spread of disinformation, slander, and hate speech.
