Speaking to reporters after a working meeting with Commission I of the House of Representatives at the Senayan Complex on Tuesday, Anis referred to the shooting incident involving Zetro Leonardo Purba, a junior chancellery officer at the Indonesian Embassy in Lima, who was killed by an unidentified assailant on Monday (September 1, 2025) local time.
“This will certainly be a lesson for us, a case to study in order to strengthen protection for our diplomats abroad. We are currently assessing it, and God willing, there will be new policies we can adopt to improve their safety,” he said.
Regarding the motive, Anis explained that the ministry has not received reports indicating intimidation against Zetro, who had been posted in the South American country for only five months.
“There is none so far, except that he had just withdrawn money from an ATM. It appears similar to a robbery, but we are still waiting for the final report. This is only preliminary information,” he noted.
Anis emphasized that the Foreign Ministry will continue to monitor the case, coordinate with Peru’s Foreign Ministry on the investigation, and facilitate the repatriation of the body once the autopsy is completed.
“For now, we have received reports that this was a criminal act, a murder. We will immediately send a letter to Peru’s Foreign Ministry requesting a thorough investigation. Yes, of course, this will also include arrangements for the return of the body to Indonesia,” he added.
In line with this, through the official X account @Menlu_RI on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Sugiono said he had spoken with Peruvian Foreign Minister Elmer Schialer to urge a full investigation into Zetro’s death.
“I have spoken with Foreign Minister Elmer Schialer to convey Indonesia’s request for a comprehensive investigation into the death of our colleague, Zetro Leonardo Purba,” Sugiono stated.
He affirmed that Indonesia remains confident Peru will ensure the highest level of security for staff at the Indonesian Embassy in Lima, their families, and Indonesian citizens in the country.
According to local media outlet Panamericana Television, monitored in Jakarta on Tuesday, Zetro died after being shot three times by an unidentified person just a few meters from his residence in the Lince area of Lima.
He was reportedly cycling with his wife at the time of the attack. Zetro was rushed to Javier Prado Clinic but did not survive. His wife escaped unharmed and is currently under police protection.
