Jakarta (ANTARA) - Over 50 people were injured in an explosion during Friday prayers at a school mosque in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri confirmed.

"Our data recorded 54 victims suffering minor to medium injuries, with some of them having been allowed to return home," Suheri stated in his statement at Cempaka Putih Islamic Hospital here on Friday.

He noted that the blast location, at public senior high school SMA Negeri 72, has been secured with police line by officers and sterilised by the bomb disposal team.

The police have established two incident command posts, each at Yarsi Hospital and Cempaka Putih Islamic Hospital, both in Central Jakarta, he added.

"The post is to help the victims' families and assist them in searching for their children treated at the hospital," Suheri remarked.

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police continues its probe into the blast, with spokesperson Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto confirming that investigators were still determining the cause of the explosion.

"We are still examining the scene with the Gegana bomb squad under a special SOP. We must ensure there are no secondary blasts before processing the site," Hermanto said.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Police's Anti-terror Special Detachment (Densus) 88 also conducted its investigation to determine whether the blast constituted an act of terrorism or not.

According to Deputy Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Lodewijk Freidrich Paulus, the explosion occurred at 12:15 p.m. as students and teachers gathered at the school mosque for the congregational Friday prayer.

The explosion took place at the rear of the mosque and at one of its main doors.

Responding to the incident, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education expressed its concern and readiness to assist in the recovery process.

The ministry's Head of the Communications and Public Relations Bureau, Anang Ristanto, said his office has coordinated with the school, the Education Service, and security forces, who are currently investigating the cause of the incident.
