Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) aims to open landslide-blocked roads in the North Tapanuli District, North Sumatra, within three days to expedite emergency responses to flooding and landslides.

Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center Abdul Muhari emphasized that accelerating the reopening of access remains the top priority to ensure the optimal flow of logistics, personnel, and services for affected communities.

“The progress of reopening alternative roads has reached around 80 percent and is targeted for completion within the next three days, while work on the main route is still being carried out in stages,” he said here on Thursday.

BNPB, together with the North Tapanuli District Government, the Ministry of Public Works, the Indonesian military, and the National Police, is deploying heavy equipment to clear landslide material blocking roads, including along the North Tapanuli–Central Tapanuli border.

Muhari said his office is also strengthening emergency response command posts, providing logistical support, and meeting the basic needs of affected communities through synergy among ministries and agencies, volunteers, and local governments.

For areas that remain inaccessible by land vehicles, BNPB is supporting the distribution of logistical aid through airlifts using helicopters until the 23rd day after the disaster to ensure residents’ basic needs are met.

To support communication and field coordination, BNPB has distributed six satellite internet communication facilities, with five units stationed in affected areas to address blank spots, while one unit is used for field surveys and mapping.

BNPB, together with the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and the local government, is also strengthening evacuation services by providing public kitchens, sanitation facilities, and logistics distribution, coordinated through a command post led by the North Tapanuli district head.

Furthermore, the local government is receiving assistance from BNPB in preparing for the transition phase toward recovery, including reviewing temporary housing locations in Sibalanga Village and providing initial support for planning permanent housing after the disaster.
