Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia expressed condolences to France following the death of a UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeeper in an incident on April 18, 2026.

In an official statement on X on Sunday, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the attack, which occurred amid a 10-day ceasefire, as unacceptable.

“All parties must exercise maximum restraint, respect the sovereignty of states, and uphold international law, including international humanitarian law," the statement said.

The ministry stressed that ongoing negotiations and the ceasefire must be fully respected and not violated through acts of violence.

Such actions risk further escalation and endanger personnel on the ground.

"We remain deeply concerned by the continued attacks against UNIFIL. Peacekeepers must never be targeted; such acts may constitute war crimes," it added.

The ministry also expressed solidarity with France and other troop-contributing countries.

It reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to strengthening the protection of UN peacekeeping personnel, as reflected in the Joint Statement on the Safety and Security of UN Personnel issued on April 9, 2026.

On Saturday, Anadolu reported that French President Emmanuel Macron said one French soldier was killed and three others injured in an attack in southern Lebanon targeting UNIFIL.

Macron said France demanded that Lebanese authorities immediately apprehend those responsible and cooperate with UNIFIL.

Indonesia had earlier lost three UNIFIL personnel on March 29 and 30 in southern Lebanon.

In addition, eight Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel were injured while serving as UN peacekeepers.

Indonesia has also called on the UN Security Council to investigate all incidents involving UNIFIL, according to the Foreign Ministry on April 4.
