Jakarta (ANTARA) - Mount Dukono in North Halmahera, North Maluku, erupted again on Monday morning, sending a column of volcanic ash 1.4 kilometers above its summit, Indonesia’s Geological Agency said.

Acting head of the agency, Lana Saria, said in a statement issued in Jakarta that the eruption occurred at 05:53 a.m. local time, with a dense ash column drifting eastward.

The ash plume appeared white to gray with thick intensity, indicating sustained emission from the crater, she said, based on visual observations from monitoring posts near the volcano.

Seismic data recorded the eruption with a maximum amplitude of 25 millimeters and a duration of 49.87 seconds, reflecting moderate but persistent volcanic activity, according to the agency.

As of the time of reporting, eruptive activity at the volcano on Halmahera Island was ongoing, with intermittent ash emissions continuing to be observed throughout the morning.

Mount Dukono remains at Alert Level II, or Waspada, the second level in Indonesia’s four-tier volcanic alert system, indicating heightened activity but no immediate large-scale eruption threat.

Authorities advised residents and visitors to avoid all activities within a 4-kilometer radius of the Malupang Warirang crater, the volcano’s main active vent.

They also urged communities to remain prepared with face masks, as ashfall occurs periodically and its spread depends on wind direction and speed, making affected areas unpredictable.
