"The regional government and people need to develop early warning system in regions prone to natural disasters," Nugroho stated when contacted in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He noted that the regional governments and people should also disseminate information on the land movement through various media, so that the local people would understand the possible occurrence of a landslide.
Landslides usually occur on hillsides or mountain slopes. To prevent landslides, people around the slopes must be encouraged to cultivate agricultural and plantation crops that are in accordance with the principles of environmental preservation and slope stability.
"Avoid settling or building on the edge of steep riverbanks and making new paddy fields or ponds on steep slopes that can cause the soil to move easily," he explained.
In addition, the local government and the community must also prevent excavation in the lower slope area which can disturb the stability of the slopes, causing landslides to occur easily.
"Generally, the peak of the rainy season takes place in January. Rainfall will continue to increase. The danger of landslides will also increase," he pointed out.
