Pancasila-based leadership is necessary, particularly in public offices of the executive, legislative, and judiciary government branchesJakarta (ANTARA) - A national leadership based on Pancasila ideology is necessary to implement good governance in Indonesia, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta's Professor Azyumardi Azra has emphasised.
"Pancasila-based leadership is necessary, particularly in public offices of the executive, legislative, and judiciary government branches," Professor Azra stated during the virtual seminar on Pancasila governance observed here on Wednesday.
Pancasila-based leadership stemmed from the five tenets of Pancasila, and national leaders should implement its values in their leadership and during the decision-making process instead of only memorizing and comprehending its theory, the Muslim scholar explained.
Pancasila is essential to develop good governance within Indonesia's democracy as an effort to fulfill the reform's mandate, implemented by eradication of corruption and proper electoral policies in the country, he added.
The rampant corruption and the recent issue within the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) caused suboptimal corruption eradication efforts and public protest, he stated.
Money politics and transactional politics need to be tackled in the electoral process to assure good governance in Indonesia, he also pointed out.
Besides Pancasila’s implementation in public offices, he also urged non-governmental entities such as public organisations, educational institutions, and other organisations with firm leadership to implement Pancasila tenets on its leadership and daily activities.
Azra also noted the necessity to develop a political system that combines universal principles of democracy with the relevant national values to avoid the impression that democracy has a foreign origin.
"We need to combine democracy and national values to ensure that our people would not see democracy as a foreign, western idea," he stated.
