Jakarta (ANTARA) - The number of patients recovering from COVID-19 in Indonesia rose to 55,128 on Tuesday as compared to 48,800 the day before, according to the Health Ministry.

Meanwhile, the number of active cases or patients receiving medical treatment or conducting isolation fell to 422,892, from 448,274, thereby causing a decline in the bed occupancy rate at hospitals to reach 27 percent nationwide.

"The national pandemic situation is closely related to the global situation. The global situation also determines whether the acute pandemic phase is over or is still underway," the ministry's spokesperson for COVID-19 vaccination, Dr Siti Nadia Tarmizi M. Epid, stated.

On a global scale, the downward trend of new confirmed cases and deaths related to COVID-19 has continued. Meanwhile, the number of confirmed cases in Indonesia also fell by 38.15 percent as compared to the previous week.

According to the ministry, the national positivity rate was recorded at 13.56 percent on Sunday. For the first time ever in the past three decades, the positivity rate fell to below two digits to reach 9.93 percent on Monday.

"Transmission (of COVID-19) still occurs. We need to keep down (the transmission rate) to up to below five percent. Most of the new cases are currently reported in Java and Bali Islands. However, their share (of the national cases) has begun to drop," she remarked.

The spokesperson appealed to all parties to remain vigilant since several provinces outside Java and Bali continued to witness an increase in the number of new cases that may continue in a few days or weeks.

As of Monday, 24 out of the 34 provinces in the country have recorded a decline in the number of confirmed cases.

"Hence, we seek cooperation from all elements of the community to help maintain health protocols and partake in vaccination programs until they receive two or full doses of COVID-19 vaccination and later the booster vaccination," she stated.

Vulnerable groups exhibiting major symptoms and running the risk of COVID-19-related death include people with comorbidities and senior citizens.

"As per the global recommendation, these groups are priority groups to get vaccinated against COVID-19," she stated.

As per the cumulative data gathered on January 21-March 6, 2022, some 70 percent of the 8,239 patients died in hospitals, as they had not been fully vaccinated. Meanwhile, 56 percent of them were elderly people and 51 percent had comorbidity.

The protective effect of vaccination is that three doses of the vaccine can reduce the death risk at 86 percent; two doses, at 60 percent; and one dose, 29 percent.
