Jakarta (ANTARA) - University of Indonesia (UI) social observer Rissalwan Habdy Lubis highlighted the need for integrated health posts (posyandus) to offer counseling sessions to address domestic conflicts for preventing violence.

"I think posyandus need to add (counseling sessions), as lower-middle-class women usually come there. There is a need for materials related to how to avoid domestic violence and make sure the family is okay," Lubis said here on Saturday.

He noted that posyandus not only help to weigh toddlers but also to maintain the quality of life across age groups, so he deemed that counseling sessions on marriage can be made available.

"In counseling, they can persuasively invite housewives to (prevent them from) becoming victims of domestic violence by understanding their rights and obligations and providing positive values in family," he stated.

He pointed out that the Religious Affairs Offices (KUA) also need to offer counseling not only before marriage but also after marriage, so that the risks of domestic violence can be reduced.

He noted that domestic violence occurs not only in lower-middle-class but also in upper-middle-class families. Lubis noted that several factors, such as lifestyle and economic conditions, led to domestic violence.

"In the upper-middle class society, it is more about socio-cultural factors or lifestyles, where the couple is romantically not too close, which eventually triggers infidelity," he remarked.

Meanwhile, economic condition is the dominant factor behind domestic violence in lower-middle-class society, he remarked.

Lubis, who gives lectures at UI's Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, expects cooperation among parties in preventing domestic violence, so that it does not harm children's psychological condition.

"When children witness domestic violence, it will harm their mental and psychological condition, traumatizing them, (and they have the potential) to become the perpetrator," he said.
