Jakarta (ANTARA) - Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Bintang Puspayoga said her ministry would continue to ensure women and children are protected while they are in refugee shelters after the November 21 quake in Cianjur District, West Java Province.

"The ministry will adhere to mandates from the president and the Coordinating Ministry of Human Development and Cultural Affairs according to the ministry's function, which is to ensure that women and child victims of the earthquake will receive their rights," Puspayoga stated, as per the statement on Thursday.

Puspayoga said that the ministry will cooperate with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) to prepare a women- and children-friendly spot to provide healthcare and psychosocial assistance.

While the psychosocial assistance is provided in collaboration with the Indonesian Psychological Association (Himpsi), the healthcare service will be provided through partnership with Cimahi City-based Jenderal Ahmad Yani University, the minister noted.

The ministry will continue to coordinate with Cianjur District's Population Control, Family Planning, Women Empowerment and Child Protection Agency, professional organizations, and non-governmental organizations to provide services to women and children, she remarked.

Moreover, Cianjur District will collaborate with non-governmental organizations to record women, children, and vulnerable groups in the disaster response operation, she added.

"The mapping of data of women and children is essential to ensure specific assistance would be received by its intended recipients and benefit them," Puspayoga stated.

Meanwhile, the ministry has also provided 440 tampons and 70 "dignity kits" for women earthquake victims. The dignity kits contain toiletries, underwear, a sarong, a blanket, and a whistle to alarm the community if violence against women and children occur. The ministry also provided 160 children-specific packages for child victims.

Earlier, on Thursday (November 24), the BNPB reported that death toll from the earthquake that struck on November 21, 2022, rose to 272 on Wednesday, from 271 the day before.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter of the 5.6-magnitude earthquake was located 10 kilometers southwest of Cianjur District, at a depth of 10 km. However, no tsunami warning was issued.
