"We will help to raise the class because it is currently Type D. How come the only hospital in the district is Type D?" Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy asked after visiting the hospital here on Friday.
During his working visit to Papua, Effendy visited a number of places. He inspected the Dekai Hospital after a meeting with the district head of Yahukimo.
At Dekai Hospital, he inspected the facilities and talked to a number of patients undergoing treatment at the facility.
After conversing with the hospital management, he learned that the hospital was experiencing a shortage of medical personnel, medical equipment, and electricity supply, so it was relying on generators.
Since the hospital lacks medical devices, any patient requiring dialysis or a CT scan has to be referred to a hospital in Jayapura. However, traveling from Yahukimo to Jayapura can only be done by air and requires a lot of money.
Effendy said that he will immediately coordinate with the Health Ministry to address the shortage of medical equipment at Dekai Hospital.
"I will coordinate with the Ministry of Health, so it can raise to Type C. If it is Type C, (the need for) health workers and medical equipment must be fulfilled immediately," he informed.
Regarding the issue of power supply, he said that he would talk to state electricity firm PLN. He also urged the local government to grant the hospital large-capacity generators.
"The electricity must not go out during surgery," he added.
