Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Water and Air Police Corps (Polairud) of the National Police (Polri) is planning to procure more vessels and helicopters to bolster its capability to safeguard the country's waters and airspace.

Speaking to the media at his office's headquarters in North Jakarta on Tuesday, chief of the Polairud, Inspector General Mohammad Yasin Kosasih, informed that the police's flotilla also needs to be expanded to support national events, such as the general elections.

He made the statement at a press conference following an event marking the 74th anniversary of the Polairud, which is a part of Polri's Security Maintenance Agency (Baharkam).

The Polairud chief highlighted that currently, most of the regional police forces across Indonesia only have C3-type boats, which measure just nine meters in length.

"We are aware that problems may arise at any time. However, the vessels in our possession are lacking the speed required to reach regions that are considered to be vulnerable," he explained.

For that reason, he added, the Polairud will try to obtain A1-type ships that are approximately 90 meters long and can transport not only personnel but also vehicles and medical equipment.

"We call such vessels multifunctional ships. The plan is to enable the ships to carry cars that can transport logistics," he pointed out.

Drawing attention to airspace security, he revealed Polairud's plan to procure AgustaWestland AW169 and AW139 helicopters within the next two years.

"God willing, all regional police will be equipped with one or two helicopters for patrol and security measures," he said.

He added that the discussion on the provision of the requisite budget is still on.
