Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Food Task Force of the Indonesian National Police (Polri) has initiated oversight on as many as 63,688 markets to protect consumers from losses caused by sub-standard products, notably rice.

"Polri’s Food Task Force has taken preventive measures, including overseeing approximately 63,688 markets," Head of Polri’s Public Information Bureau, Brig. Gen. Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, stated in Jakarta on Friday.

He added that the markets under surveillance include both traditional and modern ones, with the latter numbering over 53 thousand.

He affirmed that this supervisory initiative serves as proof of the police’s commitment to cracking down on rice adulteration comprehensively, from upstream to downstream, complementing legal enforcement with preventive measures.

The brigadier general then highlighted that Polri Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo had vowed to ensure that the ongoing investigation into sub-standard rice cases would not disrupt the circulation of the staple commodity.

"In other words, residents can still meet their needs for rice," Andiko stressed.

The Food Task Force has been scrutinizing businesses suspected of producing or distributing rice that do not meet government standards for quality, weight, and price.

On Friday, the police named three individuals from the same company, PT FS, as suspects in a rice adulteration scandal. They are identified by the initials FS, the president director; RL, the operational director; and RP, the head of the quality control section.

These suspects allegedly conspired to produce and sell sub-standard rice deliberately labeled as premium-grade, thereby violating Agriculture Minister’s Regulation No. 31 of 2017 on rice quality grading and a similar provision issued by the National Food Agency (Bapanas).

In addition to PT FS, the police have launched investigations into three other rice producers: PT PIM, SY Store, and PT SR.
