Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has officially declared the Indonesian nation’s support for the liberation of Palestine, marking two years since Israel launched its military attack on Gaza on October 7, 2023.

Speaking at the MUI headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday, Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, Chairman of MUI’s Commission for Foreign Relations and International Cooperation, highlighted the recognition of Palestinian statehood during the General Debate of the 80th United Nations General Assembly.

“The Palestinian people’s resistance against Israel has not only continued to influence global thinking to this day but has also helped foster global empathy. We must express our gratitude to the Palestinian people for defending their land,” he stated.

Sudarnoto asserted that the Palestinian struggle is a fight for humanity, justice, and sovereignty—deeply rooted in religious teachings and aligned with international law and the Indonesian constitution, which mandates opposition to all forms of colonialism.

In this context, MUI, together with Islamic mass organizations, religious councils, academics, and the Palestinian Solidarity Movement, voiced a strong stance in appreciating the efforts of key countries that have championed intense diplomatic initiatives, such as the New York Conference, which produced a comprehensive peace plan for Palestine.

“Our top priority is to stop the war and genocide, deliver humanitarian aid, and begin the reconstruction of Gaza, which has been completely destroyed,” he said.

He also emphasized that the resistance of the Palestinian people constitutes a legitimate act of self-defense against occupation and genocide, fully recognized by both international law and Islamic principles.

“We call on all nations—both governments and civil societies—to adopt the stance of the Palestinian people, who remain firmly committed to their fundamental rights to defend their land, dignity, and sacred sites,” said Sudarnoto.

MUI, together with all Islamic organizations, also urged the international community to intensify sustained pressure through political, diplomatic, media, and grassroots efforts to ensure Israel complies with the legitimate demands of the Palestinian people.

“Political, media, and public support for the Palestinian resistance is crucial as a protective umbrella for the human rights and national sovereignty of the Palestinian people,” he concluded.
