Jakarta (ANTARA) - General Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) Commissioner Totok Hariyono has called on people to put forth their grievances regarding the electoral process to the agency.

"If there is a burglary, then residents will report to the police. Hence, if there is a problem with the electoral process and dispute, then residents ought to report to Bawaslu," Hariyono stated here, Thursday.

According to the commissioner, smoothness in the voting process alone does not indicate the success of an election, as success in addressing electoral disputes must also be ensured.

He pointed out that the electoral law has granted mediation and adjudication functions to Bawaslu, thereby allowing the supervisory agency to address electoral disputes.

"I emphasize that our election does not seek 50-percent plus one (victory) only but also looks for consensus if an electoral dispute occurs," the official remarked.

Earlier, Bawaslu urged political parties to seek redressal on electoral disputes with the commission rather than demonstrating in public places when, for instance, the General Elections Commission (KPU RI) rejects their application to participate in general elections.

"For instance, if the application of political parties is rejected despite being convinced that they have fulfilled the administrative criteria (to participate in elections) and upload (their document) onto the Sipol system, they can appeal to Bawaslu regarding their rejection. They need not throng the road to protest the rejection," Hariyono stated.

Political parties can file their report with the national, provincial, or district- and municipal-level Bawaslu offices, he noted.

The official made assurance that the supervisory agency would be present to ensure that political parties' rights are fulfilled in the party registration, verification, and confirmation stages to participate in general elections.
