Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has directed state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI) to add more carriages to its Commuter Line (KRL) service to improve passenger comfort and reduce overcrowding, particularly during peak hours.

Following a limited cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace, PT KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin conveyed the president’s concerns about the daily challenges faced by Greater Jakarta commuters who rely heavily on the KRL system.

“The president emphasized that KRL services must be made as comfortable as possible. I explained that our trains are already overcrowded during rush hour, and he responded with a clear directive to immediately add more carriages,” Rasyidin said during a press briefing on Monday.

He noted that President Prabowo considers the Commuter Line a critical component of national mass transportation infrastructure.

The president also underscored that public transport systems like the KRL are pillars of modern civilization and must be managed responsibly by the government.

Beyond expanding capacity, Prabowo instructed PT KAI to enhance overall service quality, including cleanliness, safety, and comfort—especially for women passengers.

He called for upgrades to station facilities, track infrastructure, and operational systems.

“Add carriages, repair existing ones, and prioritize passenger comfort. Stations, tracks, and trains must be clean and safe. Improvements must also be made to station amenities and track operations,” Rasyidin said, summarizing the president’s directive.

The president also extended similar instructions to the Jakarta-Bogor-Depok-Bekasi (Jabodebek) Integrated Rail Transit (LRT), emphasizing safety as a top priority, alongside comfort, cleanliness, and security.

Ahead of the Christmas and New Year travel season, Prabowo reminded PT KAI to conduct thorough inspections of long-distance train routes, particularly in disaster-prone areas.

“He ordered us to carry out detailed checks in vulnerable zones, especially those prone to flooding and landslides,” Rasyidin added.
